After many years at the top, Zurich has taken the lead in this year’s Mercer ranking. Vienna’s fall can be attributed to the decline in the availability of rental properties suitable for international expatriates, as stated in a press release on Tuesday.
In the “Quality of Living Ranking 2024” by the global consulting firm, cities worldwide were again assessed according to how much they meet the everyday needs of expats and their families. Factors considered included the political and social environment, medical and health aspects, schools and education, public services, transportation, and the environment.
Zurich at the top
Zurich came out on top this year, closely followed by Vienna and Geneva in second and third place. Copenhagen once again took fourth place. Auckland followed in fifth place.
According to Mercer, Zurich achieved the top spot thanks to its excellent public services, low crime rate, lively cultural scene, and commitment to sustainability. “These factors, as well as the goal of expanding intercontinental flight connections, make Zurich an ideal location for international employees,” it said. However, Zurich is also one of the most expensive cities in the world due to the high cost of housing and transportation and the cost of goods and services.
“Vienna has lost one position in our ranking compared to the previous year. This can be attributed to the decline in the availability of rental properties suitable for international expatriates,” said Markus Kurth, Global Mobility Practice Lead in Germany & Austria at Mercer. However, Vienna scored well in terms of the availability of internet connections.
